I just read that Steven Spielberg will direct a remake of this 1960's Broadway hit.... Let's pray that THIS time they get real singers for the major movie roles AND ethnically correct actors! The only bright spots of the 1960's film were Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn and that Bernstein/Sondheim score! Good luck Steven!
Follow Ups:
Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn were superb. I love the Bernstein score. But most of all I love the Robbins choreography.
Not that the original film was perfect. I would love to see younger, ethnically appropriate actors in the roles who can actually SING (and dance), but I'm not enthusiastic about remaking this, especially by a director, talented though he is, with zero track record in making musicals.

With fresh new ethnic groups? Rap music for the dances? Cops taking sides? Oscars for sure.

Bernstein and Sondheim will sue from the grave.
Bernstein could, Sondheim is still alive and kicking....
"Maria" music written by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim - is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written.
Are they replacing it with a Cardi B number?
Why?
Sounds like a social-engineering extravaganza.
I have no problem with Natalie Wood. I thought the original was good enough to watch multiple times.
Maybe, we can have two classics of the same score.
I did and DO have a problem with N. Wood. She was NOT ethnically correct casting and couldn't sing. Her tracks were voiced by Marni Nixon who also voiced Eliza Doolittle for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. Don't get me wrong Natalie Wood was a beautiful woman! But she was NOT Puerto Rican AND couldn't sing! Richard Beymer as Tony was a fairly weak lead as well...
Nt
will increase the Realism.
The Move Score was different and Better than than the Broadway Score too.
I've played them both.
The whole thing is Very Dated, tho.
