The Germans outgunned the allied tanks. The 88 mm cannon was a tank killer. The Sherman 50 mm bounced off most armored parts of the Tiger.
Follow Ups:
Not sure where you got the 50 mm?
The little Stuart had a 37 mm main gun, but don't know any US armor that fielded a 50 mm gun. The Germans had a couple, though...
I am going off of memories for many years back. I guess I should have just said the existing main gun was not effective against the big German tanks. The 17 pounder changed that, but it was like putting lipstick on a pig.

The 17 pounder was a fine cannon. All the cannons in the 70's mm rage were tank killers. The problem with the Firefly was it was a half assed attempt to arm it with a tank killer weapon. The turret was to small and they had to solid mount the weapon minus the recoil assembly. Everytime it fired it recoiled the entire tank. And, the Sherman was still a Sherman. It was more mobile than the Tiger and Tiger II but the Germans had figured out early on how to take them out.
