Denis Villeneuve directed the 1st one but not the 2nd one. That's the difference.

It just doesn't hold up to the same standard as the first and is less personally involving. The US government turned "bad guy" and Del Toro played his role every bit as good as the first. Just not enough to make it rise above violent mediocrity.

I loved the first one but this one was very disappointing. Not worth the time in my opinion. Laughably poor in some parts.
