Change of pace pitch. We open with the classic McCall destroying people as if he was Mars himself. Good action. Then we see more bad things happen to people we don't know that must be avenged. People McCall worked with are being offed in the name of tying up loose ends.
This time we see a more action oriented Denzel. We learned about all his OCD behavior and rituals combined with the close interactions of Moretz and her plight against Rooshan pimpsters the first time around. This time McCall takes a local black youth under his wing trying to save him from "the corner". It is a nice human interest subplot that soon sweeps the kid into McCalls own fight against being "loose-ended" himself.
The film opens with a nice international flavor beginning in Brussels. Leo and Denzel hop across to see if they recognize any recognizable killer trademarks. Coming home, more things happen and a lot of action ensues. I think half the fans will like the first better whereas I prefer Dos.
3.5 wonks for cinematography, characters, and action
1 wank for cramming in unrelated action to show us how bad McCall is.
PS. Orson Bean is a billion yeas old and Bill Pullman does pull-man duty as always.
Follow Ups:
We liked it. I thought almost every shot was an interesting perspective. The camera would slide around a corner exposing the hall, or the camera was placed alongside the gun and the shooters face, a perspective I've never seen... that said, the camera angles never drew attention to themselves, it was simply stimulating.
I would have liked a few more stopwatch timed kick ass scenes, but the sequel might have been better then the original.
Have a great day
Nobody today commands screen presence the way Denzel Washington can. No matter if he's just reading a book or cutting somebody's heart out. I thought the 'tense' was more amped up in this movie than the original. That said, I do think the story line was a little light in the heinie. At 63 (I know that because Denzel's birthday is the day after mine) Denzel is at the top of his acting game and he showed it in this movie. And not to forget but a big shout out to Antoine Fuqua. This man has a gift. Go see this movie.
...I don't remember the first one 4 years ago very clearly, but it seemed pretty preposterous at the end that he brought down the Russian Empire single-handed.
Re-visit the 1st film. Denzel kicked ass and took names.
...and I liked it - thought it was good fun.
Exactly what I expected - no more, no less.
Liked it. Thought Orson was great.

I loved the 80's TV series. This time around our hero, Denzell, is out to make things right in the world, again. I find this series a nice flipside to John Wick.
