I remember watching it as a little boy - they showed it on Soviet TV, and much of it was still retained in my memory.
The director smartly avoids assigning his sympathy any to one of several warring sides, but his ambiguity is plain obvious it is not on the communist side.
Very good film, but it would make sense to read a bit on history of Poland during WWII - one might get lost in all that whirlpool otherwise.
Follow Ups:
...watching the old movies of their childhoods.
Guess I'll go watch American Grafitti - I was in a small town beginning high school in 1962 when that film took place.
Very memorable with experiences like mine.
The older I get the more older films I watch. Just watched Peter Lorre's Crime and Punishment (1935) last night.

What a lovely crew! Bogart, George Raft, Ida Lupino and Ann Sheridan!

A favorite of mine for sure!I fell in love with Ida seeing this movie. What a great crazy she does. Alan Hale Sr. too is great, clearly "Skipper" was a chip off the old block.Oh and its George Raft. George Fart I assume to be auto-correct at work.
Thieves Highway is another good trucking movie. Lee J Cobb, Richard Conte and Valentina Cortese. 1949
