I liked the guy, with all his imperfections, where was something deep in him.
Follow Ups:
Yes, one of the great, likeable American actors, ALMOST up there with James Garner. I watched him from his "Riverboat" days on TV.
In traditional Actor form, he had several comebacks. Boogie Nights, was his last big one (no pun).
Burt Reynolds COULD act.
A few times, he DID.
Many times, he did what was needed to pull in a big paycheck. I have no problem with that - that is the purpose of a "job" or "career."
He was good at both B type films and more critical efforts like Deliverance. His Smokey and the Bandit type films are still a draw. RIP Burt.

"Boogey Nights" should have brought him an Oscar. In general, he had eyes that fixed people in the moment, speaking without sound, and listening like he already knew what you would say. I think "Malone", 1987, was a good example.
