...then watched the first season.

They did a terrific job of adapting the book - I highly recommend it.

If I recall, the first 5 episodes kept to the book and then the 6th and maybe last episode of the season veered in a different direction to keep the story going.

I tried to watch season 2 but after 3 episodes it was too dark and depressing to watch any more.

  I didn't read the book, but the wife and I enjoyed the first season. Maybe enjoyed is not the right work, but we liked it. We are on the second season and still going strong. It does pick up after it lays the groundwork.
