The Coen Brothers film is a real masterpiece - disturbing in parts, but incredibly beautiful in others. A cinematographic tour de force.
Follow Ups:
"weird for weird's sake" ... I always want to like them, but there is always something off (and not in a good way) about them.... The cinematography WAS IMO the star of the film. The stories were lacking cohesion and seemed disjointed. The last one in particular made me go... huh? But I agree that the "Girl" story and the old prospector stories were the highlights of the film.... Beautiful photography to be sure!
Watched it the night before BOBS and it lingered into it.
Both films have much in common with Slow West being (IMO) just plains
(yeah that's a pun) more coherent.

...
Certainly NOT a masterpiece (they have a few that qualify), not as bad as some (say, Hail, Caesar!) more
along an... average... Coen Brothers film. Now an average Coen Brothers film is still usually far above
average compared to many non Coen Brothers films, but can still disappoint.
BOBS is stunning to watch and the acting top notch but they really made much ado about stories that didn't seem to rise to the occasion.
IMO vignettes do not a solid film make.
Probably view it again in a few months though and glean more from it.
Have had that happen before with their films.

...the first segment is funny.
The cinematography is gorgeous.
The other stories are not really worth watching, IMO.
A gem and certainly worth the cost of NF for the month. Now on to Narcos Mexico...
I think that the Tom Waits segment was the best-
But I am biased-
all dark, some funnier than others-
Well made
Happy Listening
I really like the "Girl..." one. The valley of gold was probably close second.

...gorgeous exercises in depression and despair.
It truly is End Times.
Take a look, I think you gonna love it.

This is the first movie in which the Coen brothers did not use film - all digital. There was a very good interview with them yesterday on NPR where they discussed the process. Worth looking up.
I'll have to watch it for that shtick.
The trailers are BS and portray a funny, goofy CB film that is in fact
dour, serious, violent and rather bleak.
It's made up of vignettes.
The cinematography IS fantastic, much of the dialog brilliant.
