Don't care much about the Oscars, but my wife digs them and we both love movies.
So, we'll be watching as I try to stay awake.
Watched "The Wife", "Can You Ever Forgive Me", and "The Favourite" this week.
Close is acting, aware she's acting and pretty sure she's doing a good job of it -but she gets nominated
for her 10 minute (or so) "LOOK AT ME ACT!" scene.
She only plays her character for maybe 60% of the time in a film which is just plain shitty, very predictable,
cliche riddled, and has an extraordinarily stereotypical script.
If you've seen the movie, HE wrote it when SHE should have.
The Favourite is marvelous. Top notch acting, love the camera work and set designs
and the soundtrack is superb.
All three leads deserve nominations (though only OC got the BA nomination).
Melissa McCarthy is FANTASTIC in CYEFM, nuanced and comfortable and she IS the character.
Fun, touching and nicely done film all around. She's my choice for the award - (like I have a say in the matter).
But it's far from a romantic, sexy, glamorous or even appealing role, so atypical of Hollywood standards for women.
Yalitza Aparicio was solid in Roma, but she doesn't stand a chance to win.
She DOES have her career AHEAD of her, unlike Close, whose career is mostly
behind her.
If Close gets the golden guy it would seem a shame.

Follow Ups:
Nice upset - Olivia Colman won - I was happy the film won something even though I was hoping for best picture as well.
Green Book is probably the safest picture in terms of being palatable to the general US audience. It was the "come together and live in peace" kind of story - and that ain't such a terrible message. Fantasy as it may be in this divided world.
really.
Melissa McCarthy was fantastic, and I'd watch The Favourite again JUST for Colman,
though it is a wonderful film. Actually, we bought it, so I can.
Upset? Dunno, Close just keeps getting nominated but she is only a fair actress at best, so
that she hasn't won just means there is some small justice.
Haven't yet seen Green Book.
And I've been bored by Queen for at least 40 years, though Malek did a commendable job.
I thought he was British!
The show was a bore, as usual.

I'm in HK so it was on at 9am here and at work. And the stupid Oscar site would not show videos in this region. So I have to watch youtube for tidbits. Liked the ridiculous rabbit dress.
I liked Green Book. It was my third place pick. But good enough for a Best Picture in a relatively weak year.
Agree regarding the "Green Book". It's not a big cinematography and the subject is worn and full of racial cliches but it really shows the progress which took place in this country. And it should be celebrated not scorned on every occasion .
I'm waiting for Spike Lee to make a movie about black racism ,inability to escape the Ghetto attitudes and exploitation of a "slave" complex which keep those communities vulnerable. I'd like to see their phony leaders exposed. That movie can't be made by a "privileged white male director". I don't expect to see anything along these lines during my lifetime.

The Oscars should have an overall cast performance award - then the Favourite would win. I always feel like if you nominate two actors from the same movie they split the vote allowing an actor from some other film to win.
A Star is Born chose initially two songs for best song - Shallow and Always Remember Us this Way - but the songs would split voters and neither might win.
So they went with Shallow (the weaker of the two songs) I suspect because Bradley Cooper also sings on that track - so he has a chance to get "something" on the day as it is unlikely it will win anything but song.
The three leads in the Favourite were all mesmerizing.
But hey - they're all making millions of dollars - they got nominations at various award shows so it's hard to feel sorry for them :)
