I am currently using a Jolida JD-700 which has nice sound, but I believe is lacking in the picture department. I will only use this piece for movies. What do you guys recommend in the under $1000 range?
I recommend the Sony bdp 1 bluray and a Toshiba a2 HD. Total cost less than $1k and you have both new formats covered. The sony upconverts very well - in fact better than the pioneer elite 79 (I paid $950) and sounds much better also. Couldnt recommend ANY dvd player in that price range for movies unless you have to have SACD or DVDA. You will not want to watch dvds after watching the new formats!

I have HD and I still like to watch DVDs, Hell, I still watch laserdiscs too. How else am I gonna watch Taras Bulba, eh?
400 disc DVD jukebox. Upscales and all that too, excellent picture. Makes it so easy to enjoy your DVDs. The easier to use the more you use, the more you use the more you enjoy.
.
Just arrived yesterday.
I have only listened to two DVd Audio disks , but I am impressed.
Thanks to all those here who recommended it.
Oppo lacks deep bass and dynamics on two channel CD.
I don't use it as a CD player, strictly DVD.
I use my old cal labs DX 1 for CD
Even with DVD, the bass is not as deep as my old Toshiba 4700 DVd player. But I can live with less bass, as I believe the Oppo has cleaner mid's and better soundstage, by long shot.
I haven't spent that much timw with it yet, but Iplayed a few DVD Audio and DVD dolby 5.1 live concerts yesterday, and I thought the overall presentaion was better than my old Toshiba.
There was a specific bass part on a disk I listened to yesterday that was about where it should be. i think it can vary from recording to recording.
