There's a two-disc set (one of extras) glamorously packaged for $25, and a single-disc movie-only for $10. Both claim to be this new transfer, but are there any known differences? Bit rate, maybe...

Clark,
I can't answer your question but DVDBeaver publishes DVD reveiws including some comparative reviews of different DVD releases of the same film. They often comment on any differences between different editions like the 2 you mention, even if they don't review both. It's quite a good and informative site to check out if you're wondering which version of a film to buy on disc. Check out the link below.
They do have a review of the 2006 version (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews8/the-searchers.htm) but I'm not certain whether this is the release you're asking about.

...several aspects of the "digital restoration" are not as good as on the original laser! Great.
Nor does any other site address my issue, which I guess is, are the bitrates different on the two similar-seeming releases?

I did say that I couldn't answer your question.
At best I hoped that you might find some useful info in that review and that the site might prove useful for you when searching for info on some other films.
They do update reviews from time to time, adding comparisons with new releases of the same film or additional comments so it is possible that you could recheck that review at some time in the future and find the answers to your questions. I know that doesn't help right now but it is always handy to have a number of sites like that to check when you're chasing things.
Here are 2 further reviews, one of which is of the HD-DVD release. Neither answers your question but the first review does provide another take on the 2 disc edition:

At this new one however, we learn that the new restoration evidently comes in three editions -- none of 'em the single-disc version I have.
I'm more confused now than when I began!
Still, thanks on site.
