Planet Earth Sales higher than any other HD disc.

"British TV documentary has overtaken "The Departed" to become the biggest high-definition disc moneymaker yet.
"Planet Earth: The Complete Series," from BBC Video, has generated $3.2 million in consumer spending since its April 24 release on both the HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats, according to figures provided by Warner Home Video.
With an average sales price of about $70, that translates to about 42,000 units. Sales of "Departed" recently topped the 100,000-unit mark, but at an average street price of $25, the total amount of money generated was less than "Planet Earth." To date, "Departed" has sold 102,000 units and generated about $2.8 million in consumer spending.
"The consumer response to 'Planet Earth: The Complete Series' on both high-definition formats has been absolutely incredible, and we are truly proud to be a part of it," Warner Home Video president Ron Sanders said. "This landmark series was made for high definition, and 'Planet Earth' will be an iconic staple in our natural-history documentary library for a very long time."
"Planet Earth" contains the original, unedited British version of the celebrated series, narrated by David Attenborough. Five years in the making, the series cost $25 million to produce and was filmed by 71 camerapeople in 62 countries.
The next dual-format high-definition disc releases from BBC Video will be the Oscar-winning "A Room With a View: Special Edition" and the Peabody Award-winning natural-history documentary "Galapagos." Both titles will be out in the fall."
Gee, and there aren't even any explosions.

The price of the players aren't really that high considering what they were. I know they will continue to drop obviously but maybe you can give your opinion.

I myself have a Tosh 50" HDTV ready RPTV. Do you think one can get a decent picture upscaling through component if they bought one of these HD players until they buy a better display?

  I beleive most DVDs that are copy protected can't be upscaled via component. There are a few chinese DVD players that are exceptions, but most won't. HD goes through component just fine though.

    So the best one could hope for is 480p I suppose through component.
    
    I thought I recall "Dalton" buying a player in an earlier thread without have a HD display and he was able to upconvert/upsample over component. Maybe however he was describing what he was doing with a DVD player that was able to do it. I'll have to go back and get the details.

      I think you might be recalling it wrong, Robertc88. I am using hdmi cables for HD video. (My Denon DVD-5910 only upscales DVDs to 720p through the hdmi output anyway and I believe this is true for all other upscaling DVD players.) What you might remember me discussing was the high resolution audio from HD DVD, which is only available through hdmi output or analog outputs on HD DVD players. Since I don't have an hdmi-capable receiver, I opted to buy a Toshiba HD DVD player that has analog outputs, and returned the cheap one I originally purchased which only had hdmi and optical audio outputs.

        Guess I'll continue to tune in here to get some answers, all in an effort to avoid buying any more SD DVD titles. A HD player will be the cheapest place to start, then I'll a receiver with HDMI and afterwards a display.
        
        1) I can use an HD player with the title on one of the new formats I choose with a component connection (not all allow that type of connection I believe). Perhaps these players have better video chips which may give slightly better resolution with what I'm getting with my current SD DVD player through component. If no better resolution until I get a new TV/display, so be it but as long as a can play it than no need to buy/rent the SD DVD.
        
        2) I can use optical or coax connection (so long as the HD player has this) to get DD5.1 at least from these discs with my current Denon 3803AVR.
        
        Hopfully I have at least this much straigt. Interesting that some of the HD titles are also coming with a SD DVD also.
