One excuse being support for different lasers would compromise SACD sound quality. Plausible from an audiophile perspective, but they mix SACD and DVD (with associated video hardware) in the same source player all the time.
I'd consider an ES model which supported both Blu-Ray and Multichannel SACD but I'm not optimistic it's going to happen.
Follow Ups:
Not saying Blu Ray or HD DVD is here to stay but I would not invest in an expensive universal player at this point considering it will only play DVDs and neither of these two for video.
and added a combo Blu-Ray/HD DVD player because of the itch for HD video to feed the display.
I wasn't really looking to pick one up since I have the XA777ES for SACD and I'm really not into DVD-A (I have a Technics DVD A10 in the closet).
The Denon DVD1920 was a good value and had all I needed for video at the time. PQ is much better than the Technics player over component.
