Rather, it is an issue of ignorance. They are simply ignorant of the new hi-def video formats.
Duilawyer is right, the sample is skewed.
So are the postings in this forum. Most if not all who post here are either audio- and/or videophiles. Frankly, I can't believe no one knows about HD-DVD vs. blu-ray. However, the average Joe who watches SDTV and has a DVD player is often clueless. And frankly, I surmise that many plasma, LCD, and DLP owners are also clueless. It takes years for a new format (audio or video) to gain critical mass. And some (SACD, DVD-A, etc.) never do.
Follow Ups:
I don't see how you can say the sample is skewed without evidence. It could be skewed. For all you or DUI know, there could be a HIGHER ratio of people who bought the HD-DVD version without realizing it would not play in their disc machine than the Amazon posts would indicate. Sure, there could be a lower ratio, but without any evidence we're in no position to make that claim either way. One thing you can not ignore is that this is a serious problem and that HD-DVD, by nature of its name, is confusing to consumers. At least with SA-CD you had hybrids that could play in any CD player.

as you can see on the link, HD DVD has only one title in top 200.
Blue Ray have 7 title in top 200.
If the sales of Planet earth were to HD DVD fans, they would also buy other titles.
if only because of the Studio support.
At least (sometimes) there was an attempt put decent warnings on the packaging.
but at least the developers of sacd properly thought through the problem and built a way around it into the format, even if it wasn't always utilized.

Heck, even CD looks like a dying breed.
