Certainly the Blu-Ray picture was superlative when I tried it out in the home. However, it was only mediocre as an upconverting DVD player (not that I particularly cared, I already had a kickbutt DVD player).
I wound up with a "hedge my bets" dual-format player instead.
Follow Ups:
Prior to version 1.8, the PS3 didn't upconvert DVDs at all. Now it does and it does improve DVDs significantly. The blu-ray performance is on another level altogether. It still is considered among the best blu-ray players. You just get the game console, media server management, USB ports and blu-tooth thrown in for free.

Sounds like ps3 works well on both std. dvds and blu ray but I suppose one big disadvantage is lack of a remote?
If that's what you want, but you can't use program a universal remote for it.
