At $500 it's a no-brainer. With four USB ports, blue tooth, the hard drive, the blu-ray capabilities, the firmware updates/upgradeability, it's an $800 value.

Apparently, many people thought $600 was too much for it.

That's not meant as a shot, its just that your average Joe isn't going to spend that much on a game console. If they could manag to sell them for <$300, they'ld sell a heluva lot of them. Right now, there are about 2.4 million unsold PS3s. That can't be good. Now, they are introducing a more expensive model?
Jack
is enough.
First they said they would sell 6 million by last christmas, then it was 4M, then 2M. They didn't make any of their predictions. They are sitting on 2.4 Million UNSOLD PS3s. All of this while SELLNG THEM AT A LOSS. Add the fact that their attach rate is less than 1, and you have a real mess. I don't understand how you can so blindly buy into the PR hype.
JackPS. BTW, total discs sales as of May 27, 2007: 1,637,090 Blu-ray/1,192,410 HD DVD
I do know SONY made some mistakes with the PS3 predictions, but that is normal for predictions.
SONY have made changes, and PS3 is now number 1 seller in amazon.
Including the DVD remote was the key change.
Even with a low attachment of movies, PS3 numbers are so high, that they drive movie sales.
The pre orders for the movie 300 in Blu Ray placed in rank 6 on amazon.
SONY can afford the loss on PS3, they will make it up on games later, and on Blu Ray income.
And it is standard Japanese practice to sell a new product at a loss to gain market share quickly. They learned this from Edison and the light bulb.
In Europe SONY have sold 1 million PS3 since 23rd March at USD 820 !. So no price reductions here, sadly.
That is why HD DVD do not include PS3 sales in Europe sales ranks :-)
The PS3 isn't selling that well, I don't ubderstand why you won't accpet that fact. Its overpriced for most people. If it was selling well, they wouldn't have to lower the price to move so much unsold stock.
jack
I think, that you wanted to write "The PS3 was not selling well"
However the SONY PS3 sold far better than HD DVD players and 360 HD DVD drives.
And now PS3 is number 1 in Amazon games. That must be called selling well, because how do you get higher than number 1?
Remember that SONY had production problems, delaying USA introduction, and Europe was delayed until 23rd March 2007.
It is difficult to predict sales, you need market feedback. There is a 3 to 6 month delay from planning production size to delivery to shops.
Therefore big companies use price and adding free extras to regulate sales.
I think SONY have reacted well recently, and now SONY will again dominate the games market.
SONY now plan to ship 11 million PS3 world wide in this financial year.
And 10 million PS2. And some PSP too.
Better than before but still not great. Roughly 3 Million sold world wide, still have 2.4 million to sell. 4season's new player was built last January. selling fast? I don't think so. #1 on amazon? the A2 was too for quite a while. whoopee.

More Sony BS. They can ship all they want, that doesn't mean they will sell. Ever notice, that Sony gives numbers *shipped*, not numbers sold? Why is that? To impress the feeble minded?

Sony is losing the game market-they are sacrificing it for Blu-ray. We'll see how that works out.
You do know the develouper of the playstation, its "father" quit sony.
enjoy,
Jack
While the EB Games guy wasn't being ironic when he said "We've sold a few PS/3s", he did not seemed stunned when I asked to buy one, he did not need to descend down into the basement to fetch it, my PS/3 carton was not covered in a thick layer of dust and bat guano, and the store staff did not gather to wish a fond farewell to an old friend ;-)
thank you.
