PS3 and true 1080p output? need some help and suggestions (please)

I have a Sharp 21000 DLP (1080p) that is hooked up to a PS3 (fully upgraded software) with a component cable. At the main Sony screen it shows as being 1080p but when I playback a blu-ray disk it comes up as 1080i. Does anyone know why it goes this route? (am I doing something wrong?)

I've tried a HDMI connection but if I set the resolution above 480p then the screen becomes full of electronic noise and not viewable. I had the same thing happen when I used the HDMI output from a Denon 3910

Has anyone used the HDMI output from a PS3 to a DLP projector? Any suggestions???

Via component output, all High Definition players are limited to 720p/1080i for movie playback. Even though what's on the disc is 1080p, AACS (the copy protection system) limits the analog output resolution. If you want 1080p for movies, HDMI is the only way to go. However, if you play games on the PS3, you will not have this restriction (1080p output via component is available for games).

Firmware version for the PS3 is now 1.82, but 1080p output has been available since Day 1.

To setup the HDMI output, use Settings > Video Output Settings > HDMI > Custom . In the Custom menu, check off all of the resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p). When playing a Blu-ray movie, your Sharp should show 1080p or 1080p60. If you don't get a picture, there is a problem between the PS3 and the Sharp (usually an HDMI handshake issue).

Are you sure your Sharp accepts a 1080p signal? Sharp is one of the manufacturers who, for several years, marketed their displays as 1080p: the catch was that they could not accept a 1080p signal (they didn't want to spend the extra $3.50 for the HDMI receiver chip that was 1080p capable). If you have one of these displays, go back to the Custom screen and unselect 1080p. The PS3 will then output 1080i and the Sharp will deinterlace for 1080p unless there is an HDMI/HDCP issue.

  I tried the settings and procedure you suggested and when I use the HDMI cable the ONLY setting that seems to work is 480p. On anything higher resolution than this I get a screen full of video noise that is dominated by a green color (and nothing is visible in terms of image). This is the same result for anything above 480p.
  
  According to the Sharp manual (this is their new top-of-the-line DLP projector), it does output 1080p and this is what I see using the component cable (but, as you mentioned, only 1080i for movies).
  
  The only minor note is that for the HDMI input they refer to it as "video only" (which makes sense given that it is a DLP projector and not a television or RPTV).
  
  Might this be a problem with my cable? (I have a 15' Van den Hul HDMI cable)

  The Sharp 21000 is supposed to do 1080p and it shows 1080p when I just have the PS3 operating system screen showing. So I suspect that there may be a problem between the PS3 and the Sharp -- maybe my cable? I'll try another cable and see if I get the same results.

The Sharp looks like it will only accept 1080p at 60 Hz. I noticed this was an issue with another projector and a 1080p24 source player.

  With the latest firmware (1.82), the PS3 will output 108024p unless the display is not capable (it will switch to 1080p60). The 24p setting can be set to automatic (the default setting, it will check for 24p capability) or off (user selected no 24p output, regardless of display capability).
  
  Obviously this doesn't apply to any output resolution other than 1080p.
