Hi,
I was looking at buying the OPPO unconverting DVD player to hook up to my Samsung 1080P LCD. I read a review of the OPPO and although they liked it, they said "most projectors or flat pannels of 1080P resolution available today already have pretty good scalers and and deinterlacers, and display everything in progressive mode anyway. The only folks who really benefit from the addition of 1080P will be those few who still have CRT's". So my questions are,1) will i really notice any difference 2)should I just keep my current DVD player and hook it up via componet to the reviver.
Thanks
Follow Ups:
I just got a 1080P Sony and the OPPO upscales very well. Ignore the nonsense about the sound, it is not great just good compared to those in its price range.
I think the point made by Daryl Zero may be crucial. The HDMI output from my Sony 9100ES is recognized by my Sony LCD monitor as 1080i, and indeed looks very like HD. The component output from that same player was always recognized by my Sony 36 XBR as 480p.

If you don't have your existing player hooked up via component, then you should get an improvement from it over S-video or composite if you change to component. Since you're talking about a component connection with the Oppo, I'd start with a component connection with your current player and see how you feel about that first before considering the Oppo.
The Oppo may make an improvement due to one or both of 2 things. The Oppo may provide a better picture than your existing player and/or it may upscale better than your TV. The only way to find out if it does one or both of those things is to try it, both with the Oppo doing the upscaling and the TV doing the upscaling. If the picture you get with either of those options is better than you're currently getting with your existing DVD player, then the Oppo is an improvement. The chances of the Oppo being an improvement depend on the age and quality of your existing player.

I believe the Oppo doesn't upscale with a component connection.
Thanks guys for the input. I just dug out my old DVD player (it was in a box from moving) and hooked it up via S Video to the TV and did a comparison with the OPPO via HDMI. OK, it was a pretty noticable difference, so I guess I will stick with the OPPO.
S-video is not as good a connection as component whereas HDMI and component are much more directly comparable. I have no doubt that HDMI out of the Oppo will beat S-video out of your old machine. A much more valid comparison would be between HDMI out of the Oppo and component out of your old machine but the only real comparison would be the same connection out of both.

I have a 60" Sony SXRD, and I find the Oppo's (and others) scaler to be better than my TV's.
