ANOTHER disc, Apocalypto developed a band down the left side of the screen that looked like it was playing through dripping water. Had to stop the disc, and restart, vanished. Its the player, not the discs, because last night I moved "Help" to a different player and the problem stopped.

Now that you mention it, I am on the phone with Sony right now. They have asked questions, put me on hold, asked the same questions, restated my descrition of the problem, and put me on hold for now 18:52.
Without ANY help or even suggestions. Just some Nora Jones while on hold.

I believe that he is whining about his new BD player, the Sony BDP-300(1).
It does seem like the BD stand alones do have some issues.

As opposed to drives in computers? BTW, the Sony service said "unplug, let sit, plug back in".
We'll see.
Think of these player more like a computer than a DVD player. Unpluging it for a few minutes can sometimes help-especially for freeze-ups.

Whether it's a run of bad luck, poor product selection, or simply mistreating his toys remains to be seen.

I'll have to admire your perserverance.
BTW, I did ship that amp to Classe and they did fix it for a VERY reasonable price. Years later it's still going strong. Good luck trying to dig up some other "skeletons"; it ain't worth the effort IMHO.

here is where the topic devolved from being about video equipment to personal smears. With the usual culprit doing so.
How do you know if something is whining as opposed to being truthful accurate detailing ? Save us time, you don't.
