I have an HD Ready TV without an HD Tuner. I have used a separate SET-TOP box. I was wondering if DVD recorders that have a tuner in them can be used as a SET-TOP box? Would the quality generally be as good?Cut-Throat
Follow Ups:
It won't unscramble scrambled channels, but if the DVR has a digital tuner, it will let you get digital/HD freebies, probably just your locals, and a few oddballs.

All, I am using now is an antenna in the attic with my Current SET-TOP Box. But, a lightning strike removed some preset capability from it, so I was thinking that a DVR with HD tuner might be the way to go.

....I am in Australia so I don’t know if it is the same there.
Over here a digital hard-drive recorder (with in-built digital tuner - “PVR”) can only record from FREE OVER THE AIR TV channels. If you wish to record Satellite/Cable pay-TV you need a DVD-hard-drive recorder.
I use DVD-hard-drive recorders here as they can record everything. Of course, I then need separate set-top boxes.
I hope this helps – I mention because I know people here who buy a PVR only to find out they can not record satellite/cable TV
Good luck.
