  There were two video stores nearby that rented both Beta and VHS. I chose to support Beta since it was the "superior" format, but I only invested a whopping $100 for a used Sanyo mono top-loader. I used it chiefly for rentals and timeshifting; I bought exactly one used Beta movie.

  Many consumers today aren't even aware there was a VCR format war.
  
  Lots of technology turns over, whether there is a "war" or not: 8-track, cassette, mini-disc, laser disc, DivX (Circuit City crap),super-VHS, SACD, DVD-A, dual disc, etc.
