Follow Ups:
There are people on other forums that have decided to get rid of their BD players and go back to DVD only because of the Paramount news. Not only is that absurd, its extremely childish.
To each his own.

Blu-Ray is here to stay as long as Sony, Disney, and Fox support it. HD DVD just got a shot in the arm, they needed some increased studio support to stay alive a little longer. Until this war is resolved in favor of one format, mass adoption of HD video formats will be delayed because people will continue to sit on the sidelines waiting for a winner to appear. The only benefactor from this development would seem to be M$; If they can keep both formats from thriving, their own business plans (e.g. HD VOD) are enhanced.
I don't know if this will turn the tide, which was slightly in favor of blu-ray, but it will make for a more prolonged "war", that neither side may "win."
While I loathe ambiguous situations--which format do I chose to avoid a future obsolescence?--I have come to see this as ultimately beneficial to the consumer.
The price of HD DVD players is coming down reasonably quick; OTOH, many blu-ray players are still unreasonably expensive. The more affordability of HD DVD players has and will drive down the price of blu-ray players. And software prices will come down as well.
Bill Hunt at Digital Bits has thrown his support behind blu-ray, a move that now appears (even more?) premature. Wars are unpredictable and often waged by proxy. Whether Microsoft is behind this new development is irrelevant. If MS has a vested interest in HD DVD winning, why wouldn't they devote their resources to supporting HD DVD?
If that changes, it will be a disaster. I sure hope kekl isn't holding his breath.

What a day to miss the news.:-)

Not sure if Brad has been to his local Fry's, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Blockbuster, sure looks like Blu-Ray if filling up the shelves at these stores.
Have fun watching Transformers and the Jack Ryan collection.
Looking forward to Spiderman and Close Encounters on Blu-ray. (Good luck finding those on HD DVD ever).

You scooped me ;-)
I wonder what the real motivation was? I can think of a few possible reasons:
Blu-Ray too closely associated with competitor Sony/Sony Pictures/Columbia?
PS/3 demographics not all they hoped for? PS/3's dominance in the Blu-Ray world seems to skew movie selection towards what I'd call "guy movies", and "300" seemed like a perfect fit, but other types of movies? *shrug*
Higher royalties?
Motivation may have been that BD with a 5 to 1 player advantage and 50% more studio support could only out sell HD 2 to 1? maybe there are worries as to what is going to happen to the PS3 owner dollars once there are desireable PS3 games available?

Consider the resent announcement about Platinum titles from Disney:
"The Platinum titles are the crown jewels of the Disney Studios and we do not take releasing them lightly on any format. The proven Blu-ray technology has allowed us to take our films to new heights, fully utilizing the larger capacity and interactive capabilities for an incredible all-new consumer experience," commented Bob Chapek, President of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.
At some point, the HD DVD camp has to face the fact that blu-ray is a superior format.
