...evaluating the current state of Blu-ray and HD-DVD (see linked article).
While the information Gary shares may not be especially groundbreaking for knowledgeable videophiles here, his personal observations on the competitive strategies and niche market risks appear quite astute and without bias. I suggest reading the entire article; regardless of which camp's fire you're kindling, I think you'll find this an even handed, enjoyable read. BTW, check out the site if you're unfamiliar with it, DVDBeaver has excellent reviews and the various pressing comparisons are invaluable to DVD aficionados.

were identical video encodes for both formats. Either he didn't realize this or didn't bother to mention the possible implications. And I'd like to see what 5 (or 9) hours look like squeezed on an HD DVD (or Blu-Ray) disc. He poo-poos audio but I suspect the differences between the two (2) formats will eventually tell when music artists start to release high def video/audio products. OTOH, most people won't give two hoots about the subtleties.
wacky when he says SACD is alive as there are 5000 titles available. Yeah, at your nearest Tower Records.
I plugged in my HD player tonight, disconnected my Blu-Ray, watched Breach, enjoyed it immensely, watched Amazing Grace on my Toshiba 6980 though S-VHS....and the answer is
(Remember, I was banned from both hi-rez formats for correctly predicting the death of both formats. And pointing out there was no difference between SACD and CD, and certainly none anyone would pay for. I have no stake in the game, no financial interest in anything audio\video, period.)
So the winner between Blu-Ray and HD from the first person in the Asylum who got the DVD Audio SACD format war correct?? The winner will be........................
Neither, Both formats will wither on the vine.
They are just not enough of an improvement to buy a new player, to Joe SP. To you flamers below, please identify your financial stake in the video industry in your post.
Actually I am extremely surprised by the steady stream of classical recording that is coming out on SACD. Who would have thought that classical music, which has an extremely limited following in the big picture, would do so well on SACD, a tiny part of the recording world. But the fact is that what is coming out is not only a significant number of new recordings every month, but they are not just old warhorses designed for the mass market. In fact, if you think about it, that would never work. But recordings like the complete Beethoven sonatas played by Brautigan on pianoforte are real treasures. I thought SACD would die an early death and only have a cheapie player (which has worked flawlessly), but now I have so many recordings (including about 10 on my unplayed shelf- I'm getting behind) and so many desirable ones are coming out that I am considering stepping up to a better player.
Your views on this subject have been expressed many times. Probably you are not a classical music fan or have not really explored what is out there or coming out every month. I started buying vinyl around 1960, and I can find as many new releases of classical music on SACD per month to buy now (3-6) as I did vinyl then. To me that says a lot.

Is this a new HD player, or is it the one you told us you sold?
Why (other than a feeble chance to get some traction to snipe)? I am betting money your post has nothing to do with video, but is ANOTHER attempt to turn th conversation to me. All DUI, all the time.

Actually, your post was all about you. I just wanted to know if you bought a new player.
and why would you need to repost that I had sold mine. And why not stick to the topic of video and not me.
> > And why not stick to the topic of video and not me. < <Are you always this cranky and narcissistic, or is today special?
I merely asked you if you had purchased a new HD DVD VIDEO player, or if you were again using the one you said you got rid of. That is all I asked you. Nothing more. If you want to know why, it's because I was curious, as you very briefly mentioned a VIDEO player amongst your rants about SACD, DVD-Audio and getting banned from forums - none of which have anything to do with the topic of VIDEO.
Next question - and this one is VIDEO-related as well - did you buy the same model you had previously, or did you get a different one? If you choose to answer, I'd appreciate it if you'd try to answer without editorializing about anything other than VIDEO.
Thanks.
Just for the record, I believe they are still making SACDs, at least smaller labels are, for classical music. The DVD Beaver article is OK. And yes, both formats will probably be niche products, since the masses have no desire to replace DVD. I've been saying that all along.

Let us not confuse a drip drip drip of 3 new titles a month with a viable format. Sony has given up on it. Obviously in retrospect you said this before I did, so I apologize for not giving you credit.
.
it is on life support, how about??
Not that I've checked but I strongly suspect these artists came out on new SACDs recently. Oh, you don't listen to classical music ? If so, your loss.
