~$150 for a 1080p machine! Not much mainstream USA-centric material mentioned but it may be very interesting for it's NON USA-centric titles.
Maybe I really will need a receiver with a lot of HDMI inputs: One for HD DVD, one for Blu-Ray, one for an all-region DVD player, and now, one for HD VMD as well ;-)
Follow Ups:
they offered one of these that could also record the discs, included a burner. I have some very nice material in on the hard drive on my DVR that I would like to burn an HD copy of. Of course, I don't know what kind of copy protection one would run into, but many programs are not copy-protected, at least not now. I think the first format that offers disc burning as well as playback in a cheap unit could completely change the equation.

Apparently folks are able to play the French (R2) release of "Paprika" okay in their R1 players.
As Jack said, it's up to the specific studio whether or not to make their disc region coded. However, one year after a Blu-ray disc's initial pressing, all subsequent pressings are mandated to be region free.
HD DVD is region free, but there may be a catch:
They'll wait until the release windows are over.
They are one of the few studios who who really care about Region Coding. Most realize what a joke it really is.
Jack
Some studios use it some do not.
