Let me explain. I have digital cable in our family room, hooked up to an older 4:3 Sony 53" rear projection TV i've had since 2001. But upstairs in my bedroom, there is no digital cable box (or any cable box for that matter), and the cable signal is analog SD (standard defenition), via a conventional 75ohm coaxial cable. I have an old Panasonic 27" CRT TV hooked up to it, but want to replace it with a 37 to 46" high def wider screen TV so I can watch DVD's AND be able to watch SD cable TV. Before I got digital cable on my Sony 4:3 RPTV, I had analog SD cable, and it surprisingly looked almost as good as digital (which is to say, very good!). Sony had some kind of 'line doubling' technology which really worked wonders on SD cable. I am looking for an HDTV that will work very well with SD cable (not all TV's can make a standard signal look it's best), and of course, look great with HD sources. I have essentially ruled out DLP and plasma TV's, so I would be considering LCD or RP-LCD models (like Sony's 3LCD technology). Also, do all current HDTV's have a coax cable input that accepts SD cable TV signals, or are they all geared to just work with digital sources? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info guys! The 34" CRT based Sony sounds like a nice set, but if I am going to spend all this moolah, I think I want to go with a larger screen than that. Today, at 'Sears', I saw a Sony KDF-46E2000 '3LCD rear projection' LCD HDTV (with a 46" screen) that made my jaw drop! The picture was so detailed, and the colors so true to life! It essentially looked like the plasma TV's that were on display, and they were selling it for $899. They didn't have one in stock (it is a discontinued model, but has garnered great reviews on Amazon), so they said they would order one from 'the warehouse'. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they get it in. The only drawback is that this TV needs a lamp replacement every few years, typically. Of course, my concern is that the proper lamp won't be available a few years down the line, so I just may buy an extra lamp to keep in storage until I need it.
I saw one in Wally World and the picture looked very good. No projection lamp to worry about either.
Regards, Larry
Democrats have what it takes to take what you've got and you can't make any bread if you don't have any dough. Vote Giuliani /Rice in '08.
There are probably a few remaining at the usual big box retailers. They work very well with all sources, have an excellent picture, but are really a monster to move at about 200lbs. They were available earlier this year for under $700 new,and I'll bet they can still be found for even cheaper.
Baba-Booey to you all!
Simple fix.
Put 14 2" ball casters on the bottom of the stand before setting TV.
Now you can push it all over the place.
that's actually a 34", model number KV34XBR910. That is smaller than you asked for, but if you have the room it's certainly worth the look.
Baba-Booey to you all!
Actually I think the old CRT based RPTVs are tough to beat in this regard, assuming you have space for about a 24 inch depth. I dont think Sony still makes their 46 incher, but the Hitachi models are similar. I know Hitachi makes a 51 inch model and I see it often advertized recently for about $700. Best $700 big scren picture on the planet.
The only down side is that these are heavy to move around, and you may not have the space to handle the depth.
My Sony 46 incher fits conveniently between two cabinets and the depth is just right to bring the screen even with the cabinets. Reliable too.
