I had always thought that the Denon DVD 2910 was the best affordable denon dvd player to buy, but it's now discontinued. I only watch dvd's-no blu-ray etc (I'll worry about that when the formats shake out). I want hdmi and I think the automatic selection to the right image size for my samsung dlp tv. which model?

And thought both did a great job on video. If the audio quality is of any concern, go with the 3910. I'm hanging on to the 3910 for a good long while, it's a great player for both video and audio discs.
3910s go for 425+ on Audiogon - a smokin' deal...

I've got a 2910 and really appreciate it. The couple of reviews I've read speak highly of its replacement, the 2930, so that should be an option for you, and you can always go further up the line.
I think the "automatic selection to the right image size for my samsung dlp tv" may depend a little on how your TV handles HDMI inputs. I know that with my Loewe 32" LCD screen I have to change aspect ratios manually. I know it's an annoyance but it isn't a make or break one for me. I also find I get best results changing the TV's settings to 4:3 rather than doing the change at the 2910. I use a Harmony remote and I have a button set up for the TV's aspect ratio setting which lets me make the adjustment easily and quickly. I'd go for the HDMI connection and picture quality first and just see how the aspect ratio adjustments work out.

Hi,
After living with a very unreliable DENON DVD-3800 ($1300), I am looking at a $170 Oppo. The picture quality and sound of the DENON is fantastic, assuming it will actually read the disc. That model player may be an anomaly, since AFAIK it was only available for about 6 months. I am guessing it has serious design flaws, especially WRT how its buffering works. In any case, it has shown several very irritating problems -- open/close doesn't work properly, screen freeze during layer transitions, random screen freeze, and total device lock-up. DENON in NJ had it several times but couldn't get it right. Geez -- the luck I've had!
Cheers, Joe
