Hi,
I am thinking about getting a new dvd player but the whole HDMI
thing has me confused.
The manual says it meets the EIA-861 standard.
So if I get a Hi Def player will it do hi def through the HDMI?
Will the Oppo HDMI be compatible with it? That's my real question, I have
heard those are nice, and my dvd player's tracking is getting a little wonky.

That Oppo player ought to work great via HDMI hookup, and if yours is indeed a 480p "Enhanced Definition" TV, it may be all you need right now. Neither Blu-Ray nor HD DVD is likely to give you significantly better quality on a 480p display.
The Nintendo Wii is a blast, and almost anyone should find something to like between Wii Sports, Warioware, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Cooking Mama and any number of brain-training games. (I am a Nintendo Corp shareholder). The free news service, web browser and weather channel are also more enjoyable than I would have expected. Visuals tend to be simple, cheery, but someone really thought things through in depth and it shows. I also own a Sony PS/3: It's a pretty good Blu-Ray player, and a powerful, if clunky and not especially enjoyable, multimedia hub.
Get the Oppo. They are nice DVD players overall. It should work with your HDMI. They usually have a 30 day return policy, so if it doesn't work, you can return it.
HD players will work fine over HDMI, and some of them are better with DVDs that the Oppo. They are also more expensive.

Hi,
I appreciate the thought, but if I was to spend that much money, I'd want a universal player. And I am waiting for someone like Oppo to come out with one
that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Right now I am watching Farscape, an old scifi series. The Dutchess of Duke Street, a Masterpiece Theater series from the Seventies. And House.
While Netflix has started carrying hi def dvds... there aren't many, and I am
not sure how much better they are really going to be. By and large, I don't think the answer will be a lot for what I actually watch.
As far as games go, I was at the Mall yesterday. I saw a Need for Speed Carbon for 20 bucks. Maybe when it hits ten bucks.
Never in a million years would I pay game console prices for games. I get one or two expensive games a year as presents. The ones I buy myself are 10 to 25 bucks. I can wait.
I might make an exception Wii at some point.
But that is because I might get the wife to play something with me.
That looks like something she might enjoy.
It makes a big difference.
You can download the kind of games you'd play with your wife for $2.99 (like Piyotama--see link below) off the PSN store--the PS3 hooks right up. As for premium games, I just sold Call of Duty 3 for PS3 on ebay for only about $20 in anticipation of Call of Duty 4. Deals are out there.
A universal player won't let you play games and doesn't have a nice big hard drive four USB ports and bluetooth like the PS...and as for formats, well, there is tons of overlap. I just saw the Blue Planet and The Dream Is Alive IMAX documentaries on Blu-ray (it's also available on HD DVD). Black Book and several other BDs are on the way. The only thing on HD DVD I wish was out on Blu-ray is The Big Lebowski.
