If the display supports 1080i, that is the resolution you'll get from Blu Ray. You just need to set that resolution of the menu of the Blu Ray player.

You will not be able to upconvert your SD DVDs though over component with a Blu Ray player. You would need HDMI for that. You can play SD DVDs through component at 480p resolution.

And nice to see you on this forum, too! I downloaded a copy of the instruction manual for the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray disc player, and read through the setup instructions. It's a lot clearer to me now. One thing I didn't realize was that you can use this player with any type of TV as long as it has at least an S-video jack. You won't get HD images through that connection, of course, but I had been under the impression that BD players could only be used with an HD display, which is not the case (at least not with the S300). It seems that I could just replace my 9000ES with the S300 and it will play SD DVDs just fine at 480P, plus I will get the bonus of being able to play BDs at 1080i. Now I wonder how the S300 rates as an 'ordinary' 480P player?
BTW, I am also planning to get an HD display, but I was just curious if I could even use a BD player at all if I happen to get one before getting the display.

  Of course you can use the Blu-ray player with any type of TV, and I suspect that includes composite, S, and componenet video connections. But I'd be surprised if Sony's Blu-ray outputs anything other than 480P except with HDMI, unless the copy protection issue has been resolved.

      AFAIK, there are no BDs currently that have this flag. (ICT = Image Constraint Token)

  As time went by since the introduction of the 9000ES, there has been lots on good quality DVD players for the buck. Leading the way are the Denons, some which include SACD playback.
  
  I'm willing to say you will found the DVD playback capability of the Sony BDP 300 will be better than the 9000ES using just 480p for both.

    ...which is due to arrive at the end of this month. I went to my local Fry's today and bought 6 Blu-ray discs, even though I don't have a player yet. I wouldn't have normally done this, but they had a sale on several titles that was just too good to resist: only $9.99 each, with some titles, like 'Pirates of the Caribbean', for only $13.49 each. Quite a bargain.

  You already have a 1080i HD display in the Sony 36 XBR. I think its lack of HDMI is the limiting factor in upgrading SD DVDs. Perhaps what you meant was a display with HDMI input.
