I have a Sony KDF-42E2000, LCD rear projection HDTV, which uses a 'user serviceable' (user can easily install) projection lamp that supposedly lasts around 6000 hours. Is it advisable to stock up on at least one of these lamps, or do you think they will be available in 2 or 3 years (when my lamp dies)? My fear is that Sony will discontinue this lamp by then. I've heard 'horror stories' of people purchasing HDTVs that require lamps, and not being able to get any because the manufacturer discontinued their specific model HDTV AND the lamp that goes with it!

If you buy a backup bulb and store it for, say a year or two, and if you replace the original bulb with this bulb and the replace blows up in a day or so (early failure from manufacturing defects are common), how do you claim under a 3-month warranty?
I have that precise issue. The bulb in my Sony Qualia blew up after about 18-months of use, and it took the dealer more than 3 months to get in a replacement (does not look good in terms of long-term support by Sony). I immediately ordered an other replacement to have on hold, but this is a gamble.
.
I'm still on my original bulb, with a guesstimate of about 4,000 hrs on it. I bought a spare a few months ago, just to have on hand.

Hi,
This post got me thinking that I should have a replacement in hand. I went to the SONY parts web site and of course my lamp is not listed. My manual sez I need an XL-5200, but the closest SONY shows is an XL-5000U which they simply say is for SXRD TVs. I sent in a response to SONY and am awaiting a response, but if you know of other suppliers I would appreciate knowing who they are.
Thanks, Joe
I think its the XL-5100.

I did a search on Yahoo and found several web merchants who have the lamps but not the assemblies. Cost is about $100 less, but I'm not sure if these lamps are the exact replacements as claimed. In any case, your info is appreciated.
Thanks again, Joe
Your fear is justified. As an example - I have a friend who bought an HP-branded DLP RPTV in 2005, despite my warnings. HP discontinued their DLP lineup a little over a year later, and dumped parts availability too. Instant obsolescence.
The bad thing about lamps is that they tend to go right at the worst moment - like in the middle of your Superbowl party.
So - calculate how many hours you use the set per year, decide how long you're realistically going to keep the set, factor in the number of hours the lamp is supposed to last, and buy as many as you need to cover yourself, plus one extra.
If you never use all the replacements before you get rid of the set, you can gouge less-foresighted people on eBay in a couple of years ;-)
Sony has changed bulbs with new and improved bulbs; from time to time. Thus stocking up on existing bulbs for popular sets may have its down side.
