The impact of cheap HD DVD probably won't really be felt, if ever, until the folks start buying movies to use with their Christmas presents. Spring 2008 will be a better gauge. E.g.I've got two of the HD-A2s and am not sure what to do with them yet, though I do have a buyer lined up for one of them.
Follow Ups:
Somehow I suspect that many of the bargain-hunters who jumped on the $99 HD DVD player will be taken aback when they see the cost of the software, holiday discounts and free-by-mail offers notwithstanding...

Walmart was who pioneered dvds as a loss leader. You can thank them for 1st week of date and date releases being around ~$15. If anybody can drive HDM prices down Walmart can.
If Walmart decides to be a player in the HD biz, they'll sell the discs relatively cheap. They have the bargaining power.

If they keep doing this on a regular basis, it could have a big impact. Otherwise, I'm in agreement $100 HD DVD players with $30 movies does not sound like a good solution for your Wal-Mart crowd.
