It's not that they haven't offered free movies before, it's that the big sale with 10 free Blu-ray movies only involved the PS3 -- not stand-alone players. So when they see Blu-ray movies, they don't just think of Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Sharp or those crappy Korean stand-alone players, but the PS3 as well.
No, I didn't. They have packaged movies with the PS3 before. I take it they send away for the 10 freebies, or are they boxed (or sold) with the PS3? If its the former, many probably won't bother. If its the latter, then that's another story.

Wal-mart gave the 10 free discs to buyers at purchase time (the other 5 are part of the BDA promotion, so those were mail-in deals). They have only packaged 1 movie at a time with the PS3: this deal gave you 10 Blu-ray movies immediately and 5 more via mail-in. Even Wal-marts that had little or no Blu-ray media were sent special shipments for this promotion.

Criticizing PS3 sales is a weak approach to decry Blu-ray adoption.
