It's like viewing the series anew; even Shatner's acting looks better in HD, which is a major accomplishment, and the rich color spectrum is vastly improved. Some of the original serie's dialog and 60's era sexism is a bit dated and occasionally cringe-worthy, but the storylines hold up and the new effects only add to the overall impression that this series was well filmed and deserving of it's legendary status.
If you don't have an HD player, even if you're already firmly entrenched in the Blu-ray camp, this just might make it worthwhile to consider hopping on-board the HD express (as well).

My copy is the UK R2 version. I wonder which opening music this will have.

My plate is full right now, so I'll wait until the number of HD disks still in the shrinkwrap has shrunk down a bit. Heck, I still haven't worked my way through the ST NG DVD boxsets (partially because the PQ sucks nowadays) picked up during a Fry's blowout sale.
Of course, by the time that DeepDiscount sale comes around again, there will have been more HD BOGO sales to keep more shrinkwrap-infested HD media laying about the house. (Assuming either format is still around....)
Even in SD, these look good. I've seen a few episodes on TV (SD), and it was clear they put alot of time and energy into remastering this. I really was surprised how good this looks in HD though.
No, it doesn't improve Shatner's acting.

I ordered this on Sunday, the last day of deepdiscountdvd's 20% off sale. My Toshiba A3 is supposed to ship around 12/14, according to the latest from Amazon-really looking forward to seeing these episodes anew. Every review I've seen so far is a rave, high price notwithstanding.
As to the remastering improving the Shat's acting, well-watch Miri again and then decide as to whether or not you're being overly influenced by the enhanced visuals :)
Now, if we could just get the films in HD........
