receiver and speakers - anything decent for a few hundred dollars?
I know it sounds impossible but if I do not ask I will not know...
It is for a friend who has a family and does not have a lot to spend for a Christmas present

at BESt BUy. I've bought several at $69 as gifts for nieces and nephews
InsigniaŽ - 200W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System with DVD/CD/MP3 Player
Model: NS-H2002 | SKU: 8254337
A basic digital surround receiver, with no fancy stuff like HDMI or more than a couple of digital inputs shouldn't cost too much over $100 with some luck if it's an older model on sale. 4 used, somewhat matching stereo speakers from thrift stores or yard sales or Craigslist, and configure the receiver for 4.0
Really really cheap is a stereo receiver, and wire the surround speakers in series, and connect them from left hot to right hot. This will give you passive surround decoding, not too far removed from Dolby Surround. Put the rear speakers as far back as possible, to add delay.
I have seen many decent complete HT set-ups on the local Craigslist. As people move up to newer or better systems the perfectly good medium level system of five years ago goes for almost nothing. I am watching for a high end receiver or separates about 2-5 years old. If I found one I would sell my current system, complete, for less than $200 and it does a very decent job. So I am sure there are similar units out there. Go local and you can see it first and not pay shipping.

...such as the Onkyo system in the link, which can be had for less than $500 (HTIB=Home Theater In a Box).
However, it should be obvious that for these prices, corners will be severely cut, even from a well-known consumer electronics firm. IMO if funds are very tight, it's better to do as high-quality of a two-channel system as can be afforded, to get the best possible sound. Ultimate enjoyment will be greater than being surrounded by lower-quality noisemakers.
