The information you're seeing is not organized the way you think it is.
The correct way to view the bestsellers in DVD Players is to use the link I have provided.
Don't click on it unless you want a nasty surprise.

BTW, I think Samsung may just be dumping the 1400. They've pretty much dropped the 1200, and withdrew the 2400 (before it was ever released), so they can concentrate on the dual player.

You can also sort by price or by reviews.
My DVD player ranking shows 4 cheap DVD players as the best selling before any HD player.
Do you really believe that a HD player can be number 1 among normal DVD players? Then I can sell you a bridge in London:-)
Does most people buy normal DVD players at USD 37 or USD 24, or do they buy USD 200 HD players?
Also go to Best Buy, and you will find the Samsung Blu Ray player is sold out.

Amazon have two different Toshibas standing on rank 1 depending on the list you select. At least one must be wrong.
They are taken within seconds of each other, and retaken twice to make sure they did not change between views.

Conclusion, these amazon.com "Bestseller" listing cannot be trusted.
And any list with an expensive HD player as number one does not match the reality of sales in USA. Normal cheap DVD players are still the bestsellers.
Blu Ray and HD DVD have together sold maybe 1 million stand alone players in USA in one year.
Normal DVD players sales in USA is about 20 million in one year.

and they are not made public in any but vague terms. In books, they rank the top 10,000 every hour based on sales over 24 hours, but there is also historical data and some sort of predictive algorithm apparently too.
Bottom line, if you do not understand how a number is calculated, you cannot understand its importance or its meaning.
And it never seemed worth much to me to see hourly sales figures at amazon anyway. Can a $300 HD-DVD player outsell a $36 DVD player? In any given hour, of course it can. Over any real time period, very very unlikely.
That's why I always thought it is meaningless to look at amazon's bestsellers, except for a gross indicator of what a few people are buying at the current time.
BluRay players top an Amazon list and it's curtains for HD-DVD, but HD-DVD players top the list and it's....

Because we have all trusted amazon, and they have so many different players as number 1.

Conversely, anyone, including you, could be right! :0)
The only real indication we can have of how the two formats are doing is to compare how many actual discs/titles are being sold (not given free or discounted with a player/gaming machine), and even then the results can be skewed one way temporarily just on the release of one title because of the small numbers at this early stage.
