I've been eyeing up the full HD 50" plasma for a while now but the cost of around £3,200 in the UK (double it for dollar conversion) is twice as much as the nearest competitor which is probably a Panasonic.
There was word that Pasnasonic or maybe some other manufacturer might release something to rival the KURO for black levels at a cheaper price, so if anyone has information from CES I'd be interested to know.

Panasonic is coming out with new models this spring which should compete with the Kuros. Among its features are a CR of up to 30,000:1 on some models (I know, I know, most CR numbers are exaggerated) and the ability to due 24p natively. Also for the first time they be introducing models in the 46" size.

Also, it looks like SED is back on. Canon announced that they started development on their own electron emitter technology for their SED display.
Pioneer’s 10 Lumen Technology (up to 15 Lumens/watt for some manufacturers) is suppose to be out this year. The good news is that they developed it with several other display manufacturers including Panasonic so hopefully some will have cheaper pricing.
...it ain't coming out until sometime in 2009. Or so we were told at CES. That's the bad news.
Here's the good news. The 10 Lumen tech is (according to those who saw it at CES) a-m-a-z-i-n-g. It is to the current Kuros what they are to other plasmas. There is a thread over at avsforum that has some comparison pics. The blacks look as black as the bezel. To me, the black levels, color depth and shadow detail of the 10 Lumen Pioneers (also to be called Kuros) is far sexier than just a thin panel itself would be. I'm more excited about the picture than a panel being skinny. Kuro is already thin enough for me thank you very much.
The additional good news is that the 10 Lumen panels aren't supposed to be pricier. When they finally get here.
It looks like we are gonna have to wait for a while.
I gotta admire Pioneer for demoing a superior new technology right next to the current SOTA Kuros.
the big benefit will be the reduction in weight. I would love to have a 70 inch flat screen that weighs less than 100 lbs. Current technology plasma screens would be over 200 lbs in that screen size.

I wouldn't hold your breath if you're waiting for Pioneer to offer this. It could start shipping next year, but there is no firm date and I doubt Pioneer shared their proprietary technology with other manufacturers. Pioneer also showed an "extreme contrast" screen only 9 mm thick. That's the one worth waiting for, but it could be years before that type of screen is commercialized and affordable in the size you want.

And they are apparently sharing some tech development, the better to save plasma doncha know, although Pioneer is the first to actually show a prototype. The suits are saying 2009, however.
This is a thread I need to follow. I almost pulled the triger on a Panasonic plasma a couple of days ago. I won't if this stuff comes out soon enough.
