......please consider the link below and put yourself in the same position a couple of years down the line with your flagship Blu-Ray player.
This isn't an anti Blu-Ray rant by the way and I can see myself buying one of the upcoming Denon Blu-Ray players myself, but ask yourself how you would feel if your SONY had to be sent in for a fix and your player was treated like a piece of meat.

Follow Ups:
Electronics are mass produced and there is a continuous downward pressure on prices. This combination does not produce the best of conditions for reliable products. My experience with Sony is up and down. I had a vhs vcr and took it back to the store within a few minutes. Pure junk. Same with the sony beta vcrs and one dvd player I had. In sony's defense all of these products were el cheapo stuff. I LOVED the 36" tubes from sony (not cheap btw - you could buy a 50" plasma for what this baby cost) and it is still in service with one of the kids. Presently I have a 60" sxrd (and I am very happy with its performance) and 2 BDPS1 blurays. The S1 sounds much better and cost less than the pioneer DV79 it replaced. (on dvds of course and its built like a tank - gotta love those first generation products) I do think that evaluating a large conglomerate like Sony should be balanced and viewed with respect to each product.
Sorry to hear of your troubles, Chris. I learned the hard way with Sony. Now the only time I'll buy anything made by Sony is if I intended the purchase to be a throw-away in the first place. No more high-dollar Sony junk for me ... been burnt by them and their supposed quality in the past. As far as I'm concerned, Sony is Japanese for Sh!t.

Got so caught up in that poor guy's thread that I lost sight of the fact that it wasn't your personal issue. Thanks for setting me straight.
I have a LOT of Sony stuff, and have also had bad experiences.
My once new Sony 36" tube TV died after only a few years. That really made me angry.. But as a loyal Sony idiot I went and bought a Sony 42" Plasma... (they discontinued plasma a few months after...)
I have a SCD777ES too... eventually when it dies, it will be an unusable doorstop because Sony has abandoned CD repair to monkeys.
I guess it IS time to wake up and stop supporting a company that does not give a damn about us!
Probably all it needs is to be cleaned and re-aligned properly; the modders (and maybe any technician familiar with optical drives) will know how to do this.

for a Blue RAy disc #2 of planet Earth? The 1400 is a piece of crap, back it goes.
.
I got BDP-S1 (refurbished) from Sony.com Even though the unit didn't come with original box, but it was well packed. The player itself looks mint, no problem at all, solid built. I guess i'm lucky.
My buddy was shopping for blu-ray players and eventually decided on the PS3 because of its performance and features. One common problem is if you want to upscale your DVDs using your A/V receiver/preamp. The PS3 is the only blu-ray machine that doesn't automatically upscale. It's optional.

Or, you just go over to AVS and read the thousands of posts in the '05 SXRD TV threads. Or do a search for "Green Blob".
Jack
because Sony Music used copy protection software on its CDs (so did other studios). This has nothing to do with the company's electronics arm, but that never stopped anyone from having irrational hatred of a manufacturer. Or a format, for that matter. You doods over at AVS sure hate Blu-ray.

Just because it is your thing, why do you think every post has to do with the HD-DVD/Blu-ray format war?
I have made up my mind that I will be eventually getting a Blu-ray player. But, like the original poster, I will NOT be purchasing a Sony machine. I too have been burned too many times by Sony to buy anything from them until they've cleaned their act up.
I am waiting on Denon, or some other serious manufacturer, delivering a machine that promises good Blu-ray performance without sacrificing superior performance for standard definition DVD playback.

The '05 SXRDs were seriously defective, and for a while, Sony denied it. They replaced defective parts with more defective parts, and alot of people were seriously hosed. Many had to pay for outside repairs, and others had to buy replacement sets. Not the best of customer support. They eventually lost a class action law suite, and had to extend their warranty of the optical block for an additional year or so, as well reimburse people who hads to get outside repairs or buy a new set.

The only reason this thread exists is to discourage people from buying Sony BD players. You guys have a transparent deep-seated hatred of Sony. That's not to minimize the legit complaints of people who have had bad experiences, but bad experiences are to be had with nearly all manufacturers at one time or another. Since the original thread points you to a nightmare on a Sony SACD player received from Sony Customer service, I'll link you to some anecdotes of flawless Sony service on SACD players, with excellent outcomes.

In case people with SXRDs didn't hear. Time is running out to respond.
Jack
How generous of you. Can I post the link for the Xbox 360 class action lawsuit?
