Now that Blue-Ray has won, I wondered which BluRay discs are: Vastly superior to the DVD? And which are just a waste of time to rebuy?
I have heard of some BluRay that are nothing special, and other that are spectacular.
(I still do not have a BluRay player, but if I want to buy a few movies prior to getting one, I do NOT want to be diappointed???)
Anyway, folks can praise or damn the BluRay they have seen, and help everyone else out.
I am first gonna get Blade Runner and go to a dealer to see if the 5th disc is correct or wrong....
Follow Ups:
Good (in no particular order) * indicates that I've only seen it on HD DVD and assume Blu-Ray is essentially identical in quality.
Planet Earth*
Galapagos*
Blade Runner*
2001*
Ratatouille
Corpse Bride*
The Simpsons Movie
Tekkon Kinkreet
Paprika
The Last Waltz
So far I'm finding that if it's a hyper-real look you're after, generally computer-generated features and ones originally shot on video will look more spectacular than ones shot on film then transferred to video, but there are happy exceptions.
But in general, I don't mind letting film look like film, and what I'm mostly interested in, particularly with older movies, is being able to enjoy them as if they were made yesterday, not decades ago. The Last Waltz isn't hyper-real; it's something else, it's like seeing a perfect print of the movie when it was still brand-new.
I found the PQ to be excellent on "Apocalypto", the "POTCs", Casino Royale", "Ratatouille" and "Deja Vu" etc... I won't claim the same for most of the 25G and 30G disks I own though "King Kong", "Troy", and "Transformers" did all right at times.
After watching a decent HD transfer, your standards for PQ will rise. I'm already wondering that some of the video "defects" (?) I find in ALL movies are more related to issues with the original master tape than compression artifacts. I'm actually paying more attention to the PQ at DLP and IMAX movie theaters in anticipation of seeing how well they transfer to HD media in the home.
Bridge to Terabithia
The Prestige
Spiderman 1/2/3 (especially 3)
Curse of the Golden Flower
Ratatouille
Planet Earth
The Sopranos season 6, parts 1/2
Not many clunkers, but the original release of Fifth Element (it has since been re-released) and House of the Flying Daggers come immediately to mind.

Almost all, with a few notable exceptions, are significantly better than the DVD. You are eventually going to have to change your standards if you wish to be picky about HD. If you judge them by DVD standards, most will be exceptional. You'll need to develop HD standards.
Buy for the titles first, then the picture. The few exceptions I know of:
House of Flying Daggers
28 Days Later
The fugitive
Eyes Wide Shut
Dirty Dancing
the first version of The Fifth Element (they remastered it later).Jack

I check in on it pretty regularly.
