I have 2 amplifiers (Proceed and BAT) with 12v trigger inputs. I need to switch the BAT on for 2-channel audio, but my Calypso preamp does not have 12v trigger output. My Anthem preamp, of course, can turn on both amps for HT duty (or program an input to just turn on the 2-channel for music).
Is there a recommended IR receiver with multiple (at least 2) 12v triggers? Otherwise, should I just program my remote to power on the Anthem for 2 channel audio and setup to trigger just the BAT...
Seems like the downside of the IR receiver would be added clutter and a little power consumed 24/7? Downside of the Anthem option would be more power consumed for the Anthem to sit on idle just to trigger for Calypso's 2-channel duties.
Any input and experience would be appreciated!

Take a look at the Niles CS12V (nilesaudio.com) current-sensing 12-volt trigger. It's an all-in-one unit ready to go. Crutchfield.com sells it for $135. I just learned about the CS12V over the weekend and I'm thinking about buying it for the Quad 99 preamp and 909 power amp system in one of our rooms.
Goggle Xantech and Niles Audio; they both sell many products for 12v switching. If your Calypso preamp has a switched power outlet, both companies sell setups that take 120volt input power, and output
12vdc. Or you can get the same results with a properly sized 120vac/12vdc wall wart; you will have to diy the 12vdc plug end.If no switched outlet, they have current sensing attachments that can be setup to supply 120vac or 12vdc power. I have used the Xantech current sensing setup, and found that sometimes one component won't pull enough current to switch it on, I had mine sensing a power strip, with both a preamp and DVD player plugged into it.
If you want your Calypso preamp to turn on one amp, and the Anthem to turn on both, one way to do it would be to come up with a DPDT 12vdc relay (like a Radio Shack Pt. # 275-206), installed the circuit of the Calypso/Bat trigger. Use the NC (normally closed) contacts for the 12vdc from the Anthem, and use the NO (normally open) and coil contacts from the Calypso trigger source (whichever way you achieve this).
That way when the relay is de-energized, and the Anthem is sending out 12vdc, it will turn on the BAT. When the Calypso sends 12vdc to the relay, it will energize the NO contacts, and send 12vdc to the BAT.
Of course, check out the links above, one of the companies I mentioned may already have something like this, in a neat pre-manufactured package, for more $$$ I imagine :^)
Heya, John. Thanks a ton for the detailed response. Good stuff!! I hadn't yet stumbled upon Xantech and their current sensing module sounds like it would do the trick. My Calypso is tube based, so I am going to assume that there will be enough current to activate.
I also checked out the Radio Shack option and think this is several miles above my electrical ability, though, the price is definitely right!
The Xantech stuff is sold "ala Carte". So you would need a SMMAG01
MAGNETIC SENSOR MODULE, a CBCSM1 CURRENT SENSOR CONNECTING BLOCK and a 781RG 12V DC POWER SUPPLY.But check out the link below, they may have something else there that might be easier.
You could also try emailing xantech and explain your application, they may tell you exactly what to buy.
