People can discuss HD without your having to remind them that this time you were right, unlike SACD\DVD Audio where you were not.
I'm tired of people giving bad advice about HD DVD and expecting us to look the other way. It was silly when the format was sinking fast, and now that it's dead, there's no excuse.

People can still watch and enjoy HD DVDs. In fact, with the current sales, its not a bad idea for people to get a movie they really like cheap. This idea, that just because HD DVD didn't win the war, so its now unwatchable, is just plain ignorant. By all accounts, vinyl is a dead format yet my LPs still play fine.
Its going to be a VERY long time before any of Universal's or Paramount's HD DVD exclusive titles make it to BD. Hell, Warner has stated that their HD DVD exclusives will be out on BD sometime in the 2008/2009 cycle. I'ld be surprised if Uni and Para were any earlier.
Wait a year or more to pay a high price for the BD version (if it comes at all), or get and enjoy the HD DVD version now.

You need to think this through. Unless you plan on wasting shelf space on an HD DVD player indefinitely, it is absolutely a waste of money to keep buying HD DVDs. everyone who adopted HD DVD will get a BD player soon, if they haven't already.

Yes, but more titles have been released on LP than any other format, going back half a century. Many high end boutique audio companies still make turntables, and many small labels and a couple majors still release LPs. HD DVD on the other hand died on the vine with barely a year's worth of titles dribbled out, and few of those are even worth mentioning. So: nice try. Your analogy doesn't work. A better analogy might be SACD, but even that had multiple electronics manufacturers behind it and stuck around for several years and it was also a higher-quality approach than its competition which was not the case with HD DVD.

That's only a few months away. A few months is not a "very long time". You're advocating throwing money at a dead format even though you know the living format will soon release the titles. That's very strange advice. It was the myopia and instant-gratification-at-a-lower-cost mentality of HD DVD adopters that created problems in the first place by blinding you to the respective merits of the formats. And you're still at it.
There is nothing in the HD DVD catalog that would warrant having two disc players in our racks. That is just insanity.

More like: waste money and shelf space on a dead format, or put your money toward enjoying the rapidly growing catalog on BD. Heck...put your coasters and doorstop on ebay and you might even get some decent cash for them now, while people like you are still advocating HD DVD.
You are very knowledgeable on many video subjects but the fact is that you spent months giving people bad information and bad advice on HD DVD vs BD and you're still doing it. The best advice is to buy Blu-ray.

I did think it through. If someone already has a player, its already on the shelf-why shouldn't people continue to use them? No, its not a waste of money to continue buying HD DVD exclusives. My A1 is built like a tank, and will last for years. Yes, most HD DVD owners probably already own BD players, and those who don't most likely will eventually, though some are waiting for ones with finished specs that aren't game consoles.> > > That's only a few months away. < < <
Gotta link specifically proving that? If not, you are just blowing hot air. For example, I cannot find Star Trek:TOS on any BD announcement, nor can I find Casablanca, or Forbidden Planet. The latter two have been mentioned, but no dates have been announced. The first is anyone's guess. No, I'm advocating people buy *movies* they like, you are stressing about formats. I'm interested in the message, you are focused on the messenger. It has nothing to do with "merits" of formats. We don't know when or even IF some of these titles will be on BD. A quick look at BD titles that were delayed or canceled makes that REAL clear. Promises from BD aren't worth very much. If someone already has a player, there certainly isn't a valid reason to get rid of it, just because it offends your delicate sensibilities. Contrary to your Black and White mentality, the two are not mutually exclusive. I buy movies that I want to see. If they are on BD, great. If not, I get them on the media they are on, be it DVD or HD DVD. This isn't about HD DVD Vs. BD. Its time for you to move on from that.

No, you didn't think it through. If someone wants to rent or buy HD movies, they will need a Blu-ray player, so they will want to get rid of the HD DVD player so as not to keep two machines that try to do the same thing on their shelves. The only exception is those who have the LG universal machines, but few sold.

You need a link to prove that 2008-2009 is a few months away? You said that's the time frame in which Universal will produce for BD their currently HD DVD-exclusive titles. I suspect some could come this summer. We'll see.

Sorry, but I've gotta call BS on that. You have never recommended a DVD in recent memory or a Blu-ray, both of which have more titles than HD DVD, which you do advocate quite often. So you are indeed stressing about formats, and you are giving bad advice.

Not true, or you'd still be watching VHS or DVD. You're interested in high definition, and the only high resolution format going forward is now blu-ray. So I suggest you reevaluate your "interests".

It would be very surprising if those titles didn't come out on BD and unless you know for a fact they won't, you probably shouldn't be advocating HD DVDs.

Oh, for goodness sake, would you stop? How many times have SACDs, CDs, DVDs, HD DVDs, games, and all manner of media been delayed? One gets the impression you would spin anything against BD, if given any opportunity.

HD DVD is dead. If you want your HD collection to grow, you'll have to expand your BD collection. You really want to keep the Toshiba around just to play what will be a woefully small percentage of your library in short order? That's just a fact, and it has nothing to do with my mentality or yours.

It's not about me or you and given that there is only a very small selection of titles on BD and HD DVD, it's not even about what people want. The only reason I want to buy something is if it's worth buying. I'm average enough that if it's worth buying for me, it's worth buying for others, and by the same token, if it's not worth buying for me, it's not worth buying for others. Clearly, HD DVD falls into the latter category, because even if one or two titles might pique your interest, it's unwise to start buying vaporware.

That's the dumbest thing I've heard in ages-even from you. There is nothing wrong with having two machines-I have 3 under my TV. My A1, the Sharp, and my Oppo.

...and you think that's normal or a good use of money or shelf-space? Most folks will not have the room, the money or the switching capabilities to support that. You are in a tiny sliver of the minority, and even you will dump the A1 at some point, after you find a good deal and pick up a few of your HD DVD titles on BD.

I'm not making their decisions, I'm giving my $.02, same as you. But unlike you, I think any recommendation to buy HD DVDs or the Toshiba, especially at this juncture, is foolish.
