What started as an occasional hang or hiccup in my Tivo has now grown into full-blown dementia and the DVR will no longer allow me to watch broadcasts over the air. After months of flawless operation, the Tivo became problematic for watching HDTV. The problems escalated and for the past month I watched only standard def, which was no fun. Then that became problematic but I could usually trick the Tivo into letting me watch by changing channels or rebooting the system. As of this past weekend, the Tivo doesn't even recognize channels or keep accurate time anymore. It's a glorified doorstop. I finally convinced Tivo to do something about it and I received a new unit today, but I'm afraid the same thing that happened to my first unit will eventually happen again.
What could be causing these problems? If it was a hard drive failure, the symptoms would be much different, I think.

It wasn't long ago you were raving about that POS.
Perhaps if it was designed right in the first place you wouldn't have these problems.

I rave about that piece of shit and my other piece of shit, the Piss3. I have lots of other pieces of shit I rave about, actually. My entire system is probably shit, don't you think.
Based on the degeneration I observed, it seemed to me the problem was software/firmware related--possibly a virus that parsed the disc drive into progressively smaller sectors until the hard drive was practically useless. A product manager at my company said the problem could have been memory-related. So who knows. I got my replacement Tivo and all is well, for now.
I originally wanted to use a motorola HDTV receiver that my buddy gave me. It died after one day, which was just as well because the software interface was trash and the customer service was nonexistent. Tivo, in comparison, is much better. But it was a very frustrating ordeal going through this problem.

I wish you luck with your new one. You may need it, especially since you wrote this: "I'm afraid the same thing that happened to my first unit will eventually happen again."

Electronics nowdays is so complicated it just as well be called magic.
We'll have to agree to disagree about human caused global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along.
