my bdp-s301 will not play dvd region 2 discs, I called sony and the rep said that sony is strict about this. Is there another blu-ray player that will play region 1 and 2 dvd discs. My old pioneer dp-47 will and I want to watch pourcupine tree arriving somewhere disc (its from england)
Follow Ups:
None of the BD players in the US are made to play any DVDs other than region 1 or 0. There may be some hacks out there, or some folks that will modify your player for you, but generally speaking they are region restricted, like most DVD player. Hopefully, when oppo eventually gets around to making a BD player, it will be region free like all its DVD players.

...what discs the OP had, but I see from websites that the vast majority of BDs I'm interested in from Region B (Europe) are region free discs. Is Jack's model a player that does PAL> NTSC converions as well? It's a 2 part thing, region free + conversion. If the disc is region free, and the unit converts, shouldn't it be able to play them?
I see there is a site selling modded BD region free Sony players. Sony prolly has these darned things locked up some other way.
This is a huge deal for me and why I haven't yet purchased a player.
I too would like a BD player that is all region and PAL-> NTSC for DVDs. That is why so many people are waiting for Oppo to put out a BD player.
You do realize, that BD doesn't have the PAL/NTSC issue, just region coding, and that's different from DVDs.

...That's why I was puzzled by the original post, cuz theoretically, shouldn't the all region BDs play fine? I misread his original post and didn't realize he was talking about his DVDs - the R1 R2 shoulda clued me in, that's what I get for trying to do two things at one time. DUH.Yup, I want to get down to one video player - PLEASE. Oppo would be perfect because they do the conversion and upscaling so well. I'm afraid we're gonna wait awhile for the BD Oppo model. sheesh
I'm kind of surprised, because I thought it was all software-controlled, and hence, would be broken by the first firmware update, but looks like I was wrong. I haven't dealt with these folks before, but the site has been online for a year or more.
I think this thread has gotten a little jumbled.
We were talking about BD players, and whether or not they would play multiple regions of DVDs, not to mention PAL-> NTSC. As a side note, BDs do not have PAL or NTSC coding.
It is assumed, they the eventual Oppo BD player will be region free for DVds as well as convert PAL-> NTSC, though I suspect it will have to have the BD region coding.

No mistake.
Still not PAL to NTSC, but its definitely a step in the right direction.
