C'mon now.
Dear God, please let the current boom last.
I promise that I won't piss it away trying to corner the silver market or buying department stores like I did the last one

...soundquest's uncontrolled flatulence obscured the TV picture. He bought a bottle of Bean-o and the picture cleared up.

Make sure your direct tv box is outputing 1080 or 720. On my Motoroal box from comcast you can change output from 480 to 720 to 1080. My neighbor had the same problem as you because his box was set to 480i. A 40 inch Panasonic plasma should look good from just about any distance.
I also have a HD Motorola box from Comcast. How do you go about checking this? I went through the setup menus and don't find anything that lets me change the output. I want to make sure my box is set correctly. I have a 46" 1080p and the picture is not the best with the cable signal.
Also, It took no fewer than 3 LCD sets till I found one that got it all together for picture sharpness and color (after adjustments).(For me, quality control goes beyond factory measured "specification", but actual product performance under conditions of use.)
Providing your signal is clean, if the device doesn't look right and can't be adjusted it probably isn't good - bring it back.
Make sure what you are watching really is HD. Also, 10 feet from a 40" is WAY to far to appreciate HD (1080). I'm sitting 8 feet from my 60 inch set.

Just a $100 Monster surge protector for all the gear and I've got a picture so sharp on true HD programming I could shave with it. Watch out for pseudo upconverted HD that some allegedly HD channels show. Go to a major network, Discovery, or ESPN in prime time to see the real thing.
Like Jazz Inmate said, also check yer connections, you need Component or HDMI.
Let's go burn down the observatory so nothing like this ever happens again
Even if you have HDTV service from DirecTV, there is plenty of content that is in standard def.
