At 40" and smaller, perhaps at 46-50" and smaller these days, they are cheaper. They're better in rooms with some level of ambient light. They're cooler running and more energy efficient.
You can't buy a plasma below 40" in size so I could ask why aren't people making plasmas rather than LCDs for a large part of the market.
And their picture quality can be very good under the right conditions and it's improving over time, just as picture quality for plasmas is.

I like the complete lack of reflective glare on LCD when there is ambient light in the room.
I never understood why they don't use anti-glare glass on plasmas. I don't think it effects resolution, and glare really is a problem for many people.

Many of the newer sets do address the issue with a different glass front.
