I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out what set to buy as our first foray into HD. Our room is very bright - two story great room with one wall with double slider and two large windows low and three large windows at what would be the second story level- we have a fabulous view of the mountains and are not going to cover that up!
But---- what TV to get??? We love plasmas but realize that one of these probably is wrong for this room. We watch a lot of dark shows - both visually and thematically! Plus - it has to look good with our S8s!
The 52" XBR4 seems to have good reviews - a non-reflective screen and a good picture. But it comes at quite a price - even with a really good deal - just over 3K. Then there's the question of an extended warranty - you just can't cart one of these babies under your arm if there's a problem!
So - what's the consensus of the brilliant minds here? Please help an old lurker out of his quandry!
Thanks -
Ken

The BOL XBR for '08 is XBR6. In the wings is XBR 7 and 8. The catch w/ the XBR6 line is that it's divided between the sizes of over/under 40", with over 40" having all the goodies.
The XBR series is, AFAIK, no longer TOL. There is the W and Z series to consider.
The problem with Sony is too much product. There's the alphabet series, and the XBR series. Within each series, features may vary on the screen size. They are just splattering the market with overkill of product, hoping that some models may sell well.
that electronic manufacturers are like automotive ones, new models come out at the end of summer so the current year's models which are overstocked often get dumped or at least reduced in price.
August/September are great times for bargains on the current year's models. Many companies will sell their overstock to giants like Costco and they are normally a one time event there. Costco is a good source as they offer consumers price protection so if the company offers a rebate with a two week period of you purchasing a set, Costco will honor the price reduction.

which means IMO, wait and see what's new in the '09 models. Then decide whether to bottom-troll now, or wait another year.
2009 might be interesting what with the 02/2009 broadcast conversion possibly causing a sales boom. That however, might be offset by the economic slump. Hmmm...
IMO, LCDs and Plasmas in 2 or 3 years from now might be reaching their technological plateau. *If this market is anything like autos, those models are already in the Alpha/Beta design stage. Then, maybe, we'll see the OLED vs. the other 2 battle commence.
I wouldn't mind seeing right now what the 2011 TVs will offer...
Thanks guys
Totally going to wait for all the new models to come out. Just can't justify the premium for the Sony - going to wait to see the new Samsungs and the new JVC hi-end model.
thanks again!

The 67" display was a DLP set (which has a flat screen), but it was not a flat panel.
... I have two flat-screen CRT TVs for my kids.
I thought, rightly or wrongly, Ken was enquiring about a flat panel and not a type of projection TV.
Just my colonial sense of humour with Dewy mentioning he saw a 67” display which I thought was obviously not a flat panel.
How is your survey going?

you're in another country but most electronics stores in the US sell only flat screens these days. I haven't seen a CRT tube set, except for on the sidewalk on bulk rubbish pick up days. In fact both Sony and Panasonic and Sharp announced about two years ago that CRT sets would no longer be imported into the US.
Admittedly there are a few rear projection LCD/DLP sets still out there, but the true flat screens are pretty much the only sets out there, especially as prices keep dropping.

....I asked because I am not aware of Samsung making a 67 inch flat panel. Maybe they do?

Maybe they don't. ;-)
Samsung do make a 67" DLP RPTV. It isn't very flat.

Check out what the owners are saying:
The Sony has a terrific picture! You can go a little lower in the line and still get a terrific picture from the Sony's. The Bravia line is quite impressive as well. I would take a look at the Bravia line before shelling out the extra dough. You may find them to be all you would want. The Sharps Aquos line has a light sensor that changes the back light brightness depended on how much light enters the room. I love the feature! I always had a hard time viewing my plasma at certain times during the day..not the case with the Sharp Aquos..these suckers can really beam if they need too.
That way you'll have no worries about covering up the beautiful view.
Right now there are some killer deals to be had on certain TV's. You can get a 52 inch Sharp Aquos fr $1699.00. This is actually below dealers cost! CC, HHgregg or Bestbuy will sale it at that price even if it isn't listed. They must price match the lowest competitor. You have to watch the prices daily on the web from the big three companies. The prices change from day to day. CC has the best price at the moment on the Sharp. In a few days it will go back up and drop again next week.
Good luck
