Internet sales are not taxed (unless the company operates in your state) in the US. However, depending on the weight/size/carrier used for the item, the shipping charge may be close to or more than the tax amount. All variables must be considered before purchase (reputable dealer, shipping charge, tax, sales/promotions, local dealer exchange/replace program, etc) and not all will be given the same weight by everyone.
For some items, it may make sense, in the long run, to pay more for an item if it can be obtained locally.
That's just in the states. What about the poor Canadiens who sometimes pay 20 - 40% more the exact same item in the Great White North that gets shipped to the states! I was almost in tears (not!) when I read stories from our friends north of the border on the AVS plasma forum. Many of them drive across the border to purchase American goods because of the price discrepancy.
... I think the drama occurs when buying from interstate or an online dealer is when something goes wrong. I don’t think I’d want to get involved in all the drama if the flat panel you just saved a lousy couple of hundred bucks on arrived broken or not functioning correctly.
I live in a costal rural area and I have bought several flat panels. I find the best price possible online then go to the local big-box store and say “beat the price and you have a sale”. After all the obligatory burble & BS that it just isn’t possible they do the deal which is usually 40% to 60% off their ticketed price (they usually have to order it in) They deliver it & set it up. No problems thus far but if there were they’d be taking it back with them. I don’t want to think of the hassle if you courier something from interstate and it is DOA AFTER the courier is long gone.
I think it is extremely wise to purchase large flat-panel TVs locally & have them locally delivered.
Some luxury cars here are DOUBLE the price you lot pay for them :o)

40%-60% off a current or new model? Sweet! What's the name of the big box store down there? Except for Costco I don't shop the big box stores that much I didn't realize they haggle their price. I'm hoping for 20% off with no 8.5% sales tax and free shipping.
BTW, I just got out of the water. Nice glassy shoulder high WNW swell at the Hook in Santa Cruz California.

.... The chain store I was referring to is Retravision.
They DO have some panels with sale prices listed but most seem to just have a little sticker and barcode with the recommended retail price on it.
Some of the recommended retail prices are way over 100% on top of wholesale.
Retail prices are routinely quoted as tax inclusive.
All electrical retailers will haggle on price even when they say they won’t :o)
There has been some good shore breaks around here lately but I haven’t had a surf for about a month. I still swim in the pool here though :o)
