Has anyone out there done any research on the cost of current Blu Ray Players? Up until today I could find no machine in our local retail outlets selling for less than $399. Are there any sources of these machines selling for a reasonable (non-premium) price?

Follow Ups:
Walmart in Salt Lake City had the Sony under $300 a month ago. I follow W-M rather closely and have discovered that each store has pricing latitude. Not sure how this is determined but in the case of close-outs or specials, it can be decided by the electronics mgr.
If you can wait, the day after Thanksgiving or 2nd week of Dec should be ideal time to buy, at least this year. Just like computer hard drives, they will go down in price with increased production and recovery of r & d costs. But watch for reduction of useful features at the same time, some being replaced by on-line connectivity nonsence.

I think I saw a Sharp for about $300 someplace like Best Buy. It even had discrete audio outs, so those of us without HDMI receivers could multichannel lossless sound. I was tempted, but I'd already opted for a Blu-ray/HD-DVD/DVD drive for my HDPC.
Here in Canada, Walmart sells the Magnavox branded, Funai built BD player for $299.
I was in the same boat as you are, trying to buy a cheap bluray player.
in the end I bought a PS3 that you can watch bluray and regular dvd movies, play games and play avi movies from any usb drive.
Wally world also shows several, including a Sony for $298 and a Magnavox for $278
Amazon has at least 8 listed for <$300. Most are older profile 1.0 machines, so buyer beware, or at least be aware.
