Both digital output and PCM are digital. Do you mean to compare bitstream with PCM?

Yes. So what should be better sounding?
Merci.

This probably doesn't apply to you Patrick, but there's also Linear PCM which is a lossless 7.1 channel format which is decoded in the player and just amplified by the receiver.
Not sure if this is sent through HDMI though - logic suggests if it is then it would need to be decoded........you can tell I haven't got a BluRay player yet. :0(

curiously it was what I thought too. In my stereo, digital via HMI seems to sound better,
I wonder why.

If the processor/receiver handles the two signals, bitstream and PCM, differently (which is incorrect or a poor design, by the way), you may hear a difference. Another possible reason for the difference is that the player or processor/receiver has the LFE glitch found on a few CE products (the LFE signal is lower than it's supposed to be).
Tricky. It is the Accuphase processor...
Thanks!
