Where oh where is Elephant Man??? Not nice to tease us poor Lynch fans. Can't wait to see what else Criterion is going release.
I wanted to order the British import This Is England (Shane Sellers), a wonderful movie and one of the best Brit indies of recent years. The UK BD is loaded with extras. BUT - it's region locked! Like they're gonna release a BD in US???? Right.
I currently own a grand total of three BDs: The Searchers, Master & Commander and Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream/PNB.
I'll be tempted to buy, buy, buy ! I need to show some restraint and get back to waiting 6 months for price drops when new releases become old releases before buying more discs. Easier said than done: I'm looking for the Who and other concert videos with uncompressed/lossless audio tracks.
Interesting ideas, keep 'em coming!
This year I'm probably buying fewer B-Ds because there's a lot of stuff out there which I may only want to watch once or twice.
Probable buys:
Chunking Express
Initial D
Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Maybes:
Wanted
Hancock
Wall E
Dr. No
Kill Bill v1 & 2
Cast Away
Iron Man
Austin Powers collection (?)
Dirty Harry
Harry Potter collection
Totally didn't need the B-D treatment:
Zombie Strippers
Never watched before, would want to rent before deciding whether to buy:
Sukiyaki Western Django
You Don't Mess With The Zohan
Welcome to Dongmakgol
Bottle Rocket
Re-Cycle
Afro Samurai
CJ7
Welcome to Dongmakgol- a good antiwar movie. Being a Korean comedy, it tends to be somewhat depressing. I recommend it for fans of Korean Cinema. I have the BD but haven't watched it yet. I was told the PQ is OK but the AQ is lacking. I'm sure the fanboys will whine about that.Re-Cycle- I have the DVD (came with an eyeball key chain[?]). I really wanted to like this, since I like the Pang Brothers and I adore Angelica Lee. Despite the interesting premise of the movie, I felt that I was being preached at during a good portion of the movie.

Thanks, seems like I should rent these before commiting my $30.
Speaking of depressing Korean movies, I just got through watching "Secret Sunshine" which I thought closed on an ambiguous note.
I haven't seen "Secret Sunshine", but I did see "You Are My Sunshine". Being a (very good) Korean love story, I felt like putting my head in the oven when it was over. That was one of my last Korean flicks. I just can't take the emotional wear-and-tear anymore.

"My Beautiful Girl Mari" is kind of dreamy / spacy and very beautiful. So far as I know, it's only available in std def though.
Poltergeist
Mongol
Wall-E
Planet of the Apes (maybe)
Dark Night
I'll probably have some impulsive buys, but generally speaking 2008 has been somewhat underwhelming.

...as much if not more than any upcoming release:
And The Last Waltz.
And some opera and ballet.
And movies!
(List above)
Heck, I don't even have a BD player! (Santa, are you listening?)
I got this as one of my free B-D selections when I bought the PS/3. I had my doubts since I don't much listen to "classic rock" much less watch concert videos. But this 32-year old (!!) movie on Blu-Ray seems like it was made yesterday and that is really really freaky and it makes a really good case for having a sound system that's equal to the video.
Great band.
Great music, played by musicians on fire.
Great filmmaker in Martin Scorsese.
The Band's music is "classic" within the true meaning of the word, not its bastardized commercial appelation on snore radio. Music is "classic" because it's good, it's honest and it still makes that key emotional connection with listeners.
Good films do the same thing, and TLW is a good one!

Maybe the James Bond releases, maybe Band of Brothers.
The list of Blu-ray releases is pretty unspectacular. It's hard to get excited about what's coming out.
Seems like whenever I pick out a new release on blocbuster online it is available on bluray. I suppose old releases will take some time but in the long run most movies worth owning will be available and bluray will will have a longer life span than dvd.

There are about a dozen titles coming over the next couple months, from Bizet to Mozart to Rossini.
