how will this look compared to HD cable on a 720p?
Follow Ups:
I hope one can ascribe some of the awfulness of some of the HD signal delivery to 'transition problems' because otherwise it's going to get rather sad.
PBS (in DC) is all over the place when it comes to HD feeds. The amount of blocking going on in the image stream (particularly during dissolves and such) makes the feed look like it was mastered from an HDV tape or a similar prosumer format. I am more than willing to blame the cable companies as well in their quest for squeezing more garbage channels into the spectrum, at the expense of bandwidth for the 'main players.'
As for SD, it can still look good when the signal is clean. A bit veiled, with the predictable color 'schmear', but certainly watchable.
The ones who will really have to step up the game are some of the independent channels (who ironically have some of the best programming.)
The 'dubbed VHS from a bad satellite feed' look really hurts now, no matter how good the show.

Hi there
By "SD" are you referring to digital or analog TV?
As others have posted, YMMV. Some digital 480i content looks like it came from a poor VCR recording. Some digital 480i content looks as good as some of the stuff that the networks pass off as HD.
But analog TV will vary even more because of the possibility of a poor S/N ratio.

HD channels of course are best, but I must say that I was surprised at the quality of the SD channesl we get on a Sony 55" XBR rear projection TV. Apparently, whatever engine this Sony has does a very nice job of taking SD and processing it so that it looks darn good at 1080 and 55". Good enough to justify prehaps buying a set if you don't have HD, but sooner or later you'll want HD.
YMMV
Most of our HD channels have an SD equivalent right next to em. Not even close going back and forth on our 46" 1080p Mitsu LCD for shows filmed in HD.

So sayeth Charles Barkley
It won't look as good as HD, but just how bad will vary. Many of the analog channels look pretty bad. Some of the SD digital channels look considerably better though. None will look as good as HD.

IMO, SD cable on my LCD looks pretty bad, but that's to be expected. SD looks best on a CRT. If you're getting an LCD, plasma, DLP etc., it's worth it to get HD cable.
