I'm sure this has been discussed a million times, but maybe people can put up with it just once more...
How much difference is there between 720 and 1080?
I'm still using my old tube set right now, but it's going to be retired within the next six months. I've heard some people say there is practically no viewable difference in picture quality except on models over 40 inches. I've heard others say yes, there is a noticeable difference even on the smaller sets.
I'll probably be getting a 37 or 40 inch, so I'm wondering: is the 1080 worth it? Most likely it will be LCD, though that's not set in stone yet either.
Thanks for your experience and opinions!

Whether you can see the difference between a 720p and 1080p display is a fuction of screen size and viewing distance, assuming everything else is relatively equal. With screen sizes less than or equal to 42" you would need to sit 6 feet or less away to see any differences in resolution. So unless you enjoy sitting that close save some money and get a 720p display. I would also recommend that you take another look at Plasma displays before going with an LCD especially if you like the picture on your CRT, they're very similar. Plasmas have better contrast ratios, deeper blacks, no blurring or motion problems and a wide viewing angle. Only the much more expensive LED based LCDs can compete and their viewing angle is still terrible.
I've heard through the grapevine that the 42 inch Panasonic Plasmas are set to be priced at $499.00 after Thanksgiving. So keep a lookout..the great deals are coming!
Wouldn't be the ideal TV for the BDR but might make a decent "interim" solution.
If you do, let me recommned a plasma over an LCD.
Just spent some time last weekend over at a friend's house. Love video sources on LCD. Love movies on plasma. Much. More.
Location, location, location. How far you sit from the screen determines so much. Take a look at the article at the end of the attached link. Around eight feet seems to be the dividing line. Over that, resolution is less important than screen size. Less than eight feet and resolution becomes more important. Ultimately you need to go look for yourself.
Screen size: 42" and up and you'll begin to see smoother edges and crisp movement on a 1080 set.
Viewing distance: If you sit closer than 8 feet away you will notice a better picture, even on a smaller screen.
Manufacturer: The better TVs will make even a 720 display look better than a lesser 1080. The video scaling devices are where the off-brands compromise most to keep costs down. Let your own eye be the judge here.
Baba-Booey to you all!
